Testing failures have plagued the response to Covid-19. How did we get here?

Watch Video

May 13, 2020

Problems with diagnostic testing have plagued the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic, leaving health officials unable to follow the virus as it spread throughout the country. So what happened?

In the video above, UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism students Miki Katoni, Molly Forster, and Max Brimelow chronicle the hurdles that tripped up the rollout of testing, including flaws in a CDC test that limited how widely it could be used, overly restrictive guidelines for who should be tested, and shortages of the equipment needed to conduct tests. The testing situation in the United States has improved, but only months after the virus first arrived in the country.
