I left Berkeley in 1976 to work as a crime beat reporter and rewrite man at the City News Bureau of Chicago. Then I became editor-in chief of the Heritage chain of Jewish newspapers on the West Coast. I served in that capacity until Heritage closed down in 2001.

I am now managing editor and senior writer of Bleiweiss Communications Inc., in Calabasas, Calif. We make magazines, newspapers and newsletters for labor unions and Taft-Hartley trust funds across the country. I also ghostwrite speeches and op-ed pieces for various labor leaders.

I do a lot of volunteering. I am an elected, albeit unpaid, officer of Los Angeles city government as a board member of the West Hills Neighborhood Council. I founded and lead a nonprofit corporation called Cinema Heritage Project that shows movies at the locations where they were made (this summer, we screened “Alien Vs. Predator” at an intersection in Chatsworth). Also, I donate my services as a graphic artist to local charities.

I’ve been married for 27 years to Janette, a high school teacher. Our children are Sarah, 23, a grad student in public art at USC, and Nathan, 18, who is starting college.
