Alexandra Hupka

Sasha Hupka is a journalist based in the Bay Area. Her work focuses on how policies and politics impact the people governments are meant to serve.

A graduate of Binghamton University, Sasha has held internships in a number of newsrooms across the country. She has experience in hard-hitting watchdog journalism and strives to hold institutions accountable to the public. As a fellow for The Arizona Republic, Sasha combed through budgetary data to explore how Phoenix-area police departments are funded, wrote a series of stories covering how tribal casinos responded to COVID-19 and documented a lack of government oversight over mining operations.

While pursuing her undergraduate degree, Sasha investigated conference travel spending within the Pennsylvania legislature for The Caucus and left the walls of the capitol to explore issues of rural broadband access in Pennsylvania for The Philadephia Inquirer. At Pipe Dream, Binghamton University’s student-run newspaper, she uncovered more 60 civil rights violations within the State University of New York system, documented ethical considerations behind a tax break awarded to Binghamton’s mayor and covered the university’s response to two student murders. Later, she became the paper’s editor-in-chief. She has also written for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, PennLive, Capitolwire and The Reading Eagle.

At UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, Sasha is focused on honing her skills in political and investigative reporting. She is interested in telling stories through a variety of mediums.

When she isn’t chatting with sources or sorting through spreadsheets, you can find her running around Berkeley, hiking California’s public lands and exploring the West Coast.
