Ed Wasserman Appointed Dean

June 12, 2012

From the Vice Provost for the Faculty:

I am delighted to announce that Edward Wasserman has been selected to become the sixth dean of the Graduate School of Journalism. He is the Knight Professor of Journalism Ethics at Washington and Lee University, with a distinguished career that also includes work for a number of news organizations. He will start on January 1, 2013.

In 1980, Ed earned his Ph.D. in media politics and economics from the London School of Economics. He went on to positions that included CEO and editor-in-chief of American Lawyer Media’s Daily Business Review newspaper chain, executive business editor of the Miami Herald, and city editor of the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune. He has taught at Washington and Lee since 2003.

As a writer, he has addressed his work on journalism ethics to a variety of readers: academics, journalists, and the general public. In addition to teaching journalism and media ethics, he has offered courses on Media Ownership and Control and on Media and Poverty. He launched OnPoverty.org, a student-run site spotlighting coverage of class and poverty.

Ed will be a worthy successor to a long line of Berkeley deans who have specialized in the study of press ethics—Ben Bagdikian, Tom Goldstein, and Neil Henry. Tom has graciously agreed to continue as interim dean until the end of this calendar year.

The campus will of course make a broad, formal announcement closer to the time of Ed’s arrival in January, but some news is just too good to wait.

Regards,

Janet Broughton
