Death of Jonathan Kaminsky, MJ 2006

December 20, 2016

The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism is sad to report that Jonathan Edward Kaminsky, a beloved member of the class of 2006, died on November 27. He was 38. He is survived by his wife Sarah, sons Adam and Elliot, parents Amy and Ken, brother David, grandmother Florence, and many loving friends.

Personal note from Joe Mullin (’06):

Jonathan Kaminsky was a great friend to me and a talented reporter who is gone much, much too soon. We could talk for hours about journalism, about our own stories, about relationships, about life”Óand we would, sometimes all in the same day”_ I will miss that so much.

Jonathan made the world around him seem interesting and lively whether he was in Berkeley, or Palau, or Washington, or Louisiana, or Boston. He had a devilish and sometimes darkly funny newsroom humor that I loved, and a BS detector that could match up with any colleague. He balanced all of that that with a kind of artistic sensitivity that I could only admire from afar. I’ll always be proud to have worked with him on the last story he wrote. It is just terribly unfair that it is indeed the last one.

I’ve always admired his supportive and loving family, especially Sarah Koster who has been through so much by his side, and his two sons who were the world to him. My thoughts are with them at this time.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Committee to Protect Journalists at cpj.org, or to 350.org.

Obituary in the Star Tribune by Andy Mannix (’15):
