The Heising-Simons Foundation, led by UC Berkeley alumna Liz Simons, has generously created the new fellowships at the J-School as a two-year pilot program. The fellowships fund two second-year students in the School’s master’s program and enable them to work in editorial and administrative capacities alongside staff members of The Daily Californian, one of the country’s oldest college newspapers. The program is intended to strengthen the School’s ties with The Daily Cal and capitalize on its new location adjacent to the J-School in a building donated by Heising-Simons and shared with the School’s Investigative Reporting Program.
The fellowship creates two new readership positions, which come with tuition remission and an annual stipend. James Reddick (’15) will work directly under Chloe Hunt, the managing editor of the Daily Cal. Joaquin Palomino (’15) will assist Tim McGirk and Matt Isaacs’ weekly investigative reporting seminar, where Daily Cal staffers are encouraged to develop high-impact enterprise stories.
“The Daily Cal reporters are extremely talented, and it’s great to bridge the gap between the journalism school and the newspaper,” Palomino said. “I think everyone — undergrad reporters, the J-School, and Daily Cal readers — benefits from the relationship.”
The Daily Cal fellowships are overseen by Dean Edward Wasserman and Associate Dean Joan Bieder.
