Aung Zaw, the Burmese journalist who co-taught this spring’s Reporting on Myanmar class with political science doctoral candidate Min Zin, has published an editorial in The New York Times. He argues that recent bouts of ethnic violence — with ultranationalist Buddhists attacking minority Muslims in western and central Myanmar — stem from a campaign by army hard-liners to resist the new government’s reform efforts. Aung Zaw, a founding editor of the Irrawaddy, an independent news organization run by Burmese exiles, returned to his base in Chiang Mai, Thailand last week.
