Berkeley J-School Students Published in New York Times

October 3, 2013

The New York Times published three video reports produced in Yangon by The Center for Digital TV and the World, a project of the Tides Center and the J-School.

They include Catherine Traywick’s (’13) look at modern poets, Chelsi Moy’s (’14) story on Buddhist nuns, and New York Times video journalist Matthew Orr’s piece on the city’s architecture.

The full video package is available here.

Earlier this summer, the New York Times published another video by journalist Pierre Kattar about tense times for Muslims in Yangon. It accompanied a story by New York Time’s Southeast Asia Correspondent Thomas Fuller. Orr and Kattar joined Digital TV and the World instructors Todd Carrel and Christopher Beaver in Myanmar to oversee the coverage. To prepare the J-School reporters at Berkeley, Aung Zaw, an editor of Irrawaddy, and Min Zin, a Berkeley doctoral candidate in political science, taught a background course called “Reporting on Myanmar.”

The Center for Digital TV and the World’s professional video coverage was made possible by a grant from The Ford Foundation. Coverage by J-School graduate students and others was made possible by grants from The Henry Luce Foundation and The Skirball Foundation.
