Kate Harloe is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in The Rumpus, San Francisco Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle, CNET, and Crosscut Public Media, among other publications. She’ll be joining Mother Jones as an Editorial Fellow in June. |

She studied narrative writing at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism; she most often writes about rural America, inequality and the environment. Her studies were fully supported by the national Foreign Language & Area Studies fellowship, of which she is a 2016-17 recipient. Her recent interview with George Saunders was selected as one of the Top Five Longreads of the week; she’s also recieved a Fellowship for the Study of Professional Ethics at Auschwitz and UC Berkeley’s award for Innovation in Communications, among other honors. |

She’s worked as a fact checker for San Francisco Magazine, a Graduate Student Assistant in UC Berkeley’s Media Studies Department, and, prior to graduate school, as an editor and community manager for Crosscut.com, where she ran an SPJ award-winning series called the Community Idea Lab. |

She’s also built trails, sold bikes and written about Indian political conflict for a living. She loves words.
