Robert Frank: Books and Films, 1947″Ò2017
A Two-Week Pop-Up Show
February 17
– March 3, 2017 at 12:00PM
North Gate Hall and Worth Ryder Art Gallery, UC Berkeley Campus
As part of the inaugural Reva and David Logan Book Symposium at the
University of California, Berkeley, an exhibit of legendary photographer
Robert Frank’s work comes to the Berkeley campus for concurrent exhibitions
in the Reva and David Logan Gallery in North Gate Hall and the Worth Ryder
Art Gallery, at 116 Kroeber Hall.
The show will feature dozens of pictures, mounted on three-meter-long paper
banners that will be installed directly onto the hallway walls without
frames. The exhibit is curated by Gerhard Steidl,
founder of Steidl Verlag, one of the world’s most distinguished publishing
companies.
Robert Frank
(b. 1924, Zurich) is one of the pre-eminent figures of 20th Century
photography. With his innovative approach to technique and subject matter
and his personal viewpoint, Frank revolutionized documentary photography
and redefined the aesthetics of both the still and moving image.
The exhibition spans Frank’s entire artistic career, from 1947 to the
present, and is visiting up to 50 universities, art schools, museums and
other non-profit spaces worldwide.
Because of the show’s size, the Berkeley exhibition will be divided between
two campus spaces. In North Gate Hall, home of the Graduate School of
Journalism (at the southeast corner of Euclid Street and Hearst Avenue),
”The Americans” will be exhibited, while the

exhibition catalogue, produced in cooperation with the distinguished German newspaper SÌ_ddeutsche Zeitung, will be for sale for $5.00 throughout the
exhibit. Proceeds will benefit the

Fund at the School of Journalism.
”Robert Frank’s work started a revolution that has continued to define
photography,” says Ken Light, the Reva and David Logan professor of
photojournalism. ”The photographs from his seminal book The Americans, which took a critical look at our nation’s life in
the 1950s, are timeless. His work continues to inspire new generations to
follow his path to see what is invisible in America.”
That work will be complemented by a series of panels
from some of the art world’s top photography experts and photojournalists,
which is sponsored by the Reva and David Logan Foundation of
Chicago and is exclusive to the Berkeley event.
The exhibition, Robert Frank: Books and Films 1947″Ò2017, is made
possible by the generous support of Steve Tisch and the Steve Tisch Family
Foundation, and Taube Philanthropies. The Richard Ehrlich Family Foundation was responsible for
organizing and facilitating the event, which is open to the public.
Admission is free.
About the Logan Book Symposium
The Reva and David Logan Book Symposium brings together photographers,
academics, students and collectors to celebrate the published photograph.
The biennial event, which launches this year, is provided for under the
2013 endowment at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism that
established a permanent professorship in photojournalism and funds exhibits
in the J-School’s Gallery. The first Logan Professor is award-winning
photojournalist Ken Light.
The events complement the Logan Photo Book Collection at the Bancroft
Library at UC Berkeley, which brought the late David Logan’s exceptional
collection of photography books to the campus.
About the Journalism School’s Center for Photography
The Center for Photography at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of
Journalism, founded in 1996, teaches photojournalism and social documentary
photography. The Center routinely exhibits world-class photographers in the
halls of the Journalism School, and its public events have brought
distinguished photojournalists such as Marc Riboud and Sebastịo Salgado to
Berkeley. It has published four books with University of California Press,
and the School has self-published seven student titles. Its annual magazine
“realeyes,” showcasing the work of student photographers, recently marked
its 13th anniversary.
