Shaleece Haas – Documentary Filmmaker, Cinematographer, Educator

Shaleece’s films are marked by a balance of poignancy and humor. Their intimate character-driven storytelling invites audiences deep into the interior worlds of their protagonists.

Shaleece produced and directed the 2016 documentary Real Boy, which screened in 23 countries, earned 20 festival awards and was broadcast nationally on PBS’ Independent Lens in 2017. She co-produced The Genius of Marian (2013; Tribeca Film Festival, POV), directed the documentary short Old People Driving (2010), and co-directed the short films Awardwinninggir (2012; SF DocFest) and City Fish (2011; Hot Docs, Documentary Channel). Her short video work has appeared on The New York Times, Teen Vogue, and the Wall Street Journal. Shaleece is currently producing a documentary about the grandchildren of Holocaust survivors who have chosen to tattoo their grandparents’ concentration camp numbers on their own bodies.

Her films have received support from ITVS, California Humanities, Berkeley Film Foundation, Fledgling Fund, Film Independent, and IFP, among others. She is a 2015 Film Independent Documentary Lab Fellow, a 2012 Working Films (Reel Aging) Fellow and a member of the Queer Producer’s Collective.

In addition to filmmaking, Shaleece has taught documentary and visual storytelling at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, UCLA Extension, and the Berkeley Advanced Media Institute. She previously worked as an editorial photographer and radio producer and was a founding staff member of the national oral history project, StoryCorps. Shaleece is a graduate of the documentary film program at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and lives in Los Angeles.
