Mitzi Perez-Caro
Mitzi Pérez-Caro, a 2024 J School alum, is a Teacher on Special Programs assisting Jamil Smith with Richmond Confidential. Mitzi is a lifelong Richmond resident and for the last decade of her career taught at the local high school in South Richmond, Kennedy High.
Mitzi’s multimedia background allowed her to focus on supporting her students in creating the Daily Eagle, a multimedia newspaper. Students in her class get hands-on experience in running a newsroom complete with editors. They partner with RichmondSide, Contra Costa Pulse, Costra Costa Spin and KQED. Most recently her student’s stories aired on KQED perspectives from June 23rd to the 26th. Mitzi has previously worked for the Richmond Pulse as a Reporter and Photographer, Rise Up Be Heard at Splinter as a Videography Correspondent, the LA School Report as a Translator, the Daily Californian as a Senior Staff Photographer and the New York Times as a Collegiate Representative. She was the first generation in her family to attend college. Her goal is to continue teaching students ethical, community-based and project-based work that empowers the community around them. She hopes to continue providing students dual and concurrent enrollment in the future to give more students the opportunity to receive college credit while in high school.
