James Wheaton
James Wheaton has taught the Journalism Law seminars at UC Berkeley and Stanford Graduate Schools of Journalism for over 20 years. He is Founder and Of Counsel at the First Amendment Project, a public interest law firm, and Founder, Of Counsel and former President of the Environmental Law Foundation, an environmental enforcement program. He is a former City of Oakland Public Ethics Commissioner, Executive Director of California Common Cause, and co-chair of the Society of Professional Journalists (NorCal) FOI Committee. He is a graduate of Brown University and Berkeley Law. Awards include: one of California’s “Top 100 Attorneys” (2015); one of California Lawyer‘s “Attorney of the Year” (2015, 2013 and 2009); Playboy Foundation First Amendment Award for Law (2001); Society of Professional Journalists James Madison award for Career Achievement (2022), and for Pro Bono Counsel (1993 and 2001); Ecology Law Quarterly Environmental Leadership award (2005), one of River Network’s national “River Heroes” (2018).
