Veteran reporter and editor Emilie Raguso launched The Berkeley Scanner in 2022 to provide more robust crime and safety coverage in Berkeley and the Bay Area. Since launching The Scanner, she has won national and statewide recognition for her news coverage as well as her innovative business model.

In 2017, Raguso was named Journalist of the Year by SPJ NorCal.

After graduating from the j-school in 2006, Raguso was a crime reporter in Modesto before launching and running Albany Patch from 2010-12. She then worked at Berkeleyside for a decade, covering politics, public safety and land use, and winning multiple awards individually and as part of the Berkeleyside team.
