Deepa Fernandes
Deepa Fernandes, an award-winning journalist who has reported investigative stories around the world, will serve as a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley Journalism for the academic year 2026-2027. During her time here, Deepa will do journalistic research and reporting on K-12 education and childhood development in the state of California.
Deepa has reported for Southern California Public Radio, the San Francisco Chronicle and many other news organizations on immigration, race and equity, early childhood education and development, and other issues. She is a former host of “Here & Now,” the national radio show from WBUR Boston and NPR, which reaches millions of listeners on over 450 stations. She has reported and lived across Latin America and the Caribbean and founded People’s Production House, a national media training organization aimed at diversifying journalism. She has held notable fellowships at Pacific Oaks College and Stanford University.
