Dave Gilson is a senior editor at Mother Jones, where he has worked since 2003. He graduated from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism in 2002. He returned to the J-School to teach a section of J200: Reporting the News focused on immigration in the fall of 2017.
Dave has edited a wide variety of articles, from breaking news and front-of-the book pieces to investigative features and cover stories. He edited Shane Bauer’s account of working as a private prison guard, which won a National Magazine Award; he was also part of the team nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy for the multimedia package that accompanied the article.
He wrangles data and charts and reports and writes on a range of topics. His investigation into a 50-year-old murder case involving the NRA’s top lawyer received SPJ NorCal’s James Madison Freedom of Information Award. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, Atlas Obscura, Salon, Frontline/World, The East Bay Express, Marketplace, and The California Report. More at davegilson.com.
