Several Berkeley journalism students were honored in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Best of the Web contest this year.
Amanda Martinez (’10) and Alba Mora-Roca (’10) received third place in the team innovation category for their website May Day Show. The students used Livestream technology to connect with reporters all over the world to cover the global International Workers Day event; celebrated in more than 140 countries.
Mariod Furloni (’11), Kate McLean (’11), Richard Parks (’11), and Tasneem Raja (’10) brought home an honorable mention in the team journalism category for their project Five Teenagers, a multimedia package that gave voice to five young people of the Teens On Target after school program in Oakland. The teens spoke about how violence affected their lives and their community. The package ran on the school-run hyperlocal site OaklandNorth.net.
A team of students from Berkeley’s News21 project also received an honorable mention for their package BARThood, which covers various communities along the Bay Area Rapid Transit system. Honored were Andrea Brambila (’09), Rhyen Coombs (’09), Marnette Federis (’09), Kiran Goldman (’09) and Elizabeth Shemaria (’09).
News21 is a national program funded by a Carnegie-Knight initiative on the future of journalism education. Students from 12 of the nation’s top journalism schools spent 10 weeks last summer reporting in-depth stories around the country and presenting them in innovative ways on the Web.
