J-School students win top scholarships

December 19, 2014

James Reddick (class of 2015) and Ted Andersen (’16) were named 2015 Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholars. With the scholarships, Reddick and Andersen are eligible for a $2,000 scholarship or placement in a foreign bureau for either Reuters, Associate Press, GlobalPost or Forbes. Fifteen students were granted OPC scholarships this year, and roughly half of them will likely be placed in foreign bureaus, based on the needs of the news organizations.

Reddick, a second-year student focused on longform writing and investigative reporting, is also a recipient of the J-School’s Daily Californian Fellowship. Andersen holds a master’s degree in international relations, and he is interested in reporting on issues related to water security. He will attend the OPC scholarship luncheon at the Yale Club in New York City in February.

Emily Gibson (’15) was granted the Abe Schechter Graduate Scholarship, a $2,000 scholarship that was awarded by the Radio Television Digital News Association. Gibson is focusing on documentary production at the J-School, and she recently completed an internship with Al Jazeera’s Fault Lines. She is interested in reporting on international and humanitarian issues.

“I have dedicated my life and career to reporting on critical humanitarian and human rights stories and I hope to use this award to continue that work,” Gibson said in a statement. “I’m incredibly grateful to RTDNA for selecting me for the Abe Schechter scholarship and for believing in the work that I do.”

Second-year student Kevin Hume (’15) won this year’s Pete Wilson Journalism Scholarship, which is named after the former KRON newscaster and is awarded annually to an outstanding Bay Area journalism student.

“I grew up watching Pete Wilson anchor the 11 p.m. news, so to be awarded the scholarship that bears his name makes me feel honored,” Hume said.

Hume interned this summer with the San Francisco Chronicle’s photo department, and he plans to pursue a career as a visual journalist after graduation. “Being chosen has given me confidence in my abilities as a visual storyteller,”” he said. “I’m excited to see what new opportunities will present themselves in the coming months as graduation approaches.”
