The Emergent World of Citizen Media

Citizen media pioneers Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, and Oh Yeon Ho, founder of OhMyNews, will join Dan Gillmor and Bill Gannon in conversation. Gannon, former editorial director at Yahoo, and Gillmor, director of the Center for Citizen Media, are co-teaching an online journalism course this fall at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Wikipedia is the well-known online encyclopedia www.wikipedia.org that anyone can edit. Users of the site have posted more than 2 million articles in English, and postings in other languages are growing rapidly. In just a few years Wikipedia has become an indispensible — and somewhat controversial — source of information.

OhmyNews, the pioneering online newspaper in South Korea http://english.ohmynews.com,
is one of the great global experiments of our time. A professional team of editors work with some 40,000 citizen reporters around the country to create a daily news report that has been hugely influential — even to the point of helping elect the nation’s current president. OhmyNews has expanded into Japan, with (so far) limited success, and has major global plans.
