Silent River | Documentary Screening and Discussion

Since the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement 20 years ago, U.S. companies have used the Santiago River as their own “waste canal.” This documentary follows a young woman and her family as they defy death threats to try and save one of the most polluted rivers in Mexico. 24 minutes. Spanish with English subtitles.

Steve Fisher is a student at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and an Univision Fellow at the Center for Latin American Studies. Jason Jaacks is a student at the Graduate School of Journalism, the founder of SplitFrame Media, and the winner of the 2014 Dorothea Lange Fellowship.

The film will be followed by a discussion with Professor Cynthia Gorney of the Graduate School of Journalism and Harley Shaiken, chair of the Center for Latin American Studies.
