Reporting Islam: Upgrading the Dominant Narrative by Recognizing Muslim Feminism

Join us for a symposium with Cynthia Gorney, John L. Esposito, Minoo Moallem and Sumbul Ali-Karamali.  Moderated by Nancy Graham Holm, professor emerita of The Danish School of Media and Journalism.

In the endless stream of coverage about jihadist terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism, Muslims who support women’s rights receive scant attention by the media.  Instead, Islamophobia is reinforced as a consequence of under-reporting.

“We never saw the stereotypes avalanching,” writes Sumbul Ali Karamali.

This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and the International House at UC Berkeley.

This program has been financed through donations to Invest in Muslim Women, a nonprofit organization focused on the economic empowerment of women, justice and peace.
