Mark Shapiro: Guest Speaker for Investigative Reporting Class

Veteran investigative reporter Mark Schapiro will discuss the
multinational reporting behind his recent book “Exposed: The Toxic
Chemistry of Everyday Products and What’s at Stake for American Power? In it, Schapiro of the Center for Investigative Reporting investigates the response of US companies and the Bush administration to the raising of environmental standards in the EU, the unprecedented global lobbying
efforts by the US to stop them, and reveals the emergence of the US as a
dumping ground for products banned elsewhere in the world. Schapiro will
provide tips on reporting out a complex subject like this in multiple
countries, developing sources, FOIA that non-Europeans can use and how to understand what you get.

Schapiro has been an investigative journalist for more than two decades
and has built an award-winning track record with a focus on environmental and international affairs. His work has appeared in Harper’s, The Nation, Mother Jones, and The Atlantic Monthly. He’s also been a correspondent on NOW with Bill Moyers, FRONTLINE/World, and Marketplace.
