Jackpot: How the Super-Rich Really Live—and How Their Wealth Harms Us All

** RSVP to the event here. **

Please join us for a conversation with author Michael Mechanic (‘94), senior editor at Mother Jones, and Prof. David Barstow, the Reva and David Logan Distinguished Chair in Investigative Journalism at Berkeley Journalism to discuss Mechanic’s recent book Jackpot: How the Super-Rich Really Live—and How Their Wealth Harms Us All.

“Jackpot recalls for me the muckraking reporting of America’s first Gilded Age when dogged prophetic journalists exposed the giants of crooked capitalism and—voila!—inspired progressive forces that changed the country. Michael Mechanic, you’ve shown us how to do it. May legions follow your example.”
–BILL MOYERS

Michael Mechanic (‘94) is a longtime senior editor at Mother Jones, where he writes and edits everything from breaking news to award-winning essays and feature stories. Born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, he earned degrees in biochemistry and cellular biology from UC Berkeley and Harvard before heading back to Berkeley Journalism for a master’s in journalism. Michael, who previously served as managing editor for the East Bay Express and a senior writer for The Industry Standard, lives with his family in Oakland. Jackpot is his first book.

David Barstow, a former senior writer at The New York Times and the first reporter to ever win four Pulitzer Prizes, is the head of investigative reporting at Berkeley Journalism, where he has been the Reva and David Logan Distinguished Chair in Investigative Journalism since 2019.
