Grad Slam challenges graduate students to present their research in just three minutes. The campus-wide competition takes place Wednesday, April 9, 3–5 p.m. on Zoom, where finalists compete for a chance to represent Berkeley at the UC-wide championship in Sacramento. This year, Cecil Egbele, a second-year Master’s student at Berkeley Journalism, is a 2025 Semi-Finalist!

Cecil, a former TV broadcaster with Nigeria’s national television (NTA) and a documentary filmmaker, focuses on social justice storytelling. Her thesis uncovers the long-standing deportation of U.S. military veterans.

The Berkeley champion will advance to the UC-wide Grad Slam Championship, competing against top graduate students from across the system. The best presentations will win cash prizes, and the top speaker will take home the prestigious UCOP Grad Slam “Slammy” award.
