Cynthia Gorney: “The Changing Face of Saudi Women”

You are invited to a special event with Professor Cynthia Gorney to hear about the making of her National Geographic story “The Changing Face of Saudi Women,” a remarkable portrait of women living in “the most profoundly gender-segregated nation on Earth.”

Despite the difficulty of obtaining reporting access into Saudi Arabia, Gorney spent two month-long visits traveling around the kingdom and interviewing scores of women, including high school students, athletes, homemakers, lawyers, professors, and new members of the royal advisory council, which only recently ended its men-only tradition. Photojournalist Lynsey Addario, who has extensive experience working inside Saudi Arabia, was also able to get extraordinary access to women who typically decline to be photographed at all, even if their faces are fully veiled.
