China's Cultural Revolution

Panelists:

Chen Xiaomei is a Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, UC Davis. Her research interests are modern Chinese literature and comparative literature, with an emphasis on drama, women’s literature,popular culture and film.

Li Zhensheng is the photojournalist who captured and preserved images of the chaos that engulfed China from 1964 to 1978. They were published in “Red-Color News Soldier: A Chinese Photographer’s Odyssey through the Cultural Revolution,” (Phaidon, 2003). His photographs offer an astonishing visual record of the political upheaval that brought China to the brink of economic collapse and civil war.

Roderick MacFarquhar is the Leroy B. Williams Professor of History and Political Science, Harvard University, and the former Director of the John King Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, Harvard University. He is currently working on a book on the Cultural Revolution.

Paul Pickowicz is a Professor in the Department of History at UC San Diego. He specializes in twentieth century Chinese history, rural studies, and popular culture. His forthcoming book is titled “The Chinese Cultural Revolution as History.”

Andrew Walder is a Professor in the Department of Sociology, and a Senior Fellow in the Institute for International Studies at Stanford
University. An expert on the sources of conflict, stability, and change in communist regimes, one of his current research projects focuses on the Cultural Revolution, with an emphasis on the Beijing Red Guard movement during 1966 and 1967.

This event is organized in conjunction with the exhibit of photographs on China’s Cultural Revolution by Li Zhensheng, author of “Red-Color News Soldier,” on display in North Gate Gallery at the Graduate School of Journalism.
