Award-winning journalist Doug Bock Clark will discuss his book The Last Whalers: Three Years in the Far Pacific with a Vanishing Way of Life, which The New York Times calls “immersive, densely reported, and altogether remarkable” and Sebastian Junger calls “spectacular and deeply empathetic.” The book was also selected as an Editor’s Choice by The New York Times Book Review. It chronicles three years in the lives of the people of Lamalera, on the island of Lembata in eastern Indonesia, who hunt sperm whales with bamboo harpoons as they reckon with the encroachment of the modern world. Clark will discuss both the anthropological and journalistic challenges of the project.

Doug Bock Clark is a Visiting Scholar at New York University whose writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, GQ, WIRED, The New Republic, and many other publications. He won the 2017 Arthur L. Carter Reporting Award.
