This screening and panel discussion will feature documentary alumni from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Presenters will first show clips from alumni work to spark a discussion about research methods, storytelling devices and ethics. Films range from personal documentaries to historical features to innovative PBS formats. Following a look at these film clips, there will be an open discussion for questions about the school’s documentary program and how to navigate the job market. This event is geared toward current and prospective students, but is open to the public.

Panelists may change, but these are the likely participants:

Marissa Aroy, MJ 2001, is currently producing a documentary for the PBS station KVIE on the history of Filipino Americans in Stockton, which in the 1930s had the largest population of Filipinos outside of the Philippines. She started a local production company with fellow doc alumni and can share a range of work experiences.

Sam Green, MJ 1993, directed the Academy Award-nominated feature documentary “The Weather Underground.” Sam will present his new short, “lot 63, grave c.” At Berkeley, Sam studied with the acclaimed filmmaker Marlon Riggs.

Dan Krauss, MJ 2004, is an Academy Award-nominated film producer and director involved primarily in non-fiction movie projects. He recently completed a documentary for National Geographic on the last Russian royal family and is currently producing a feature for DreamWorks/Paramount based on his recent film, “The Death of Kevin Carter.” Dan also has cinematography credits for PBS, HBO, National Geographic and the BBC, among others.

Megan Lardner, MJ 2002, will share her experience on the PBS series “History Detectives,” an innovative format that mixes archival research with dramatic host-driven storytelling. Megan rose from story research to producer/director. Based in New York, she is currently working on a historical documentary for HBO about the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Moderated by Jason Spingarn-Koff, MJ 2001. Jason is a New York-based documentary filmmaker whose work on science, technology and history has appeared on NOVA, BBC, MSNBC, and Frontline/World. He recently produced the lead story for the PBS pilot “Science Investigators.”
