Deirdre English, narrative writing lecturer and director of the Felker Magazine Center, will moderate a panel discussion featuring The Nation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel, foreign-policy expert Stephen F. Cohen and Oakland-based writer Dani McClain discussing political reporting as practiced by America’s oldest weekly magazine.

The Nation magazine’s editor and publisher, Katrina vanden Heuvel,  will be on campus on Wednesday, November 18 to anchor a panel discussion on political reporting. The Nation, America’s oldest weekly magazine, has been celebrating its 150th anniversary throughout 2015.

Forged in the crucible of emancipation, The Nation was started by a group of young abolitionists in 1865 committed to reporting on – and participating in – this country’s struggles to live up to its founding creed, to create “a more perfect union” by extending the guarantees of democracy to Americans of all races. Questions of civil rights and racial justice were central to The Nation from the beginning. The women’s rights movement sprang from the abolitionist movement. Issues of equal rights for all remain central to The Nation today – as do questions of war and peace, economic justice and opportunity.
