Climate change is taking more air time and column inches, and influencing more reporting beats than ever before, compelling a new level of quality in news reporting. Now you can learn how prize-winning journalists cover this complex news.
The Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment annually recognizes exemplary environmental reporting that has the potential to bring about constructive change and increase public understanding of the issues.
Ken Weiss and Usha Lee McFarling of the Los Angeles Times are the winners of the 2007 Grantham Prize. On September 24, they will receive the $75,000 prize for their five-part series Altered Oceans, a powerful comprehensive examination of a profound disturbance in the ecology of world’s oceans (www.latimes.com/oceans). According to the Grantham Prize jurors, the reporters “did more thank simply research the literature and talk to the best minds. They went to the scene to make the case. This extraordinary series gives life to all those generalities about the decline of the oceans in a way that should grab the imaginations of not only of politicians responsible for taking corrective steps but also of ordinary readers.”
Jurors also selected three Award of Special Merit recipients, each receiving a $5,000 award: Eugene Linden’s book, The Winds of Change; the NOVA teams Dimming the Sun; and the East Oregonian Publishing Company team’s series, Our Climate is ChangingÌ¢âÂå_Ready or Not.
