J298 Writing the Non-Fiction Book

This is a class for people who want to work on a nonfiction book. It is not a class for someone who vaguely thinks he or she might like to write a book someday. It is for the writer who has a well-thought-out, focused and original subject, a narrative strategy for making it catch the attention of a general audience, and the determination and self-discipline to put that subject on paper at book length. The basic work of the class will be workshopping several drafts of a book proposal, and of a sample chapter or chapters and/or a magazine-length piece based on your book-in-progress.

Restrictions & Prerequisites

If you are applying for this class, do NOT merely show up the first day; you will not be admitted. You need my permission in advance. To get that, you need to show me, before December 1, a sample of your writing and a book idea that, in my judgement, will successfully appeal to a commercial publisher. Preference for admission will be given to students at the Graduate School of Journalism, then UC faculty and graduate students in other departments. Others may be admitted if space is available.
