Since 1981, UC Berkeley has recognized the most promising photographers on campus with the Dorothea Lange Fellowship, awarded to a graduate student or faculty member for outstanding work in documentary photography. Logan Professor of Photojournalism Ken Light was the first person from Berkeley Journalism to receive this prestigious campus award— established by Lange’s husband, Berkeley economics professor Paul Taylor—in 1987. Since then, 20 Berkeley Journalism students have been named fellows. The scope and beauty of the winning work has been extraordinary.

Join us Monday, February 22, 2021 for a very special Arts + Design look at some of the winning pictures and hear the backstory of the images from the photographers themselves.

Presenters

Ken Light is a social documentary photographer and the Reva and David Logan Professor of Photojournalism at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism. He is the author of ten monographs including Midnight La Frontera, What’s Going On? 1969-1974 and Delta Time. www.kenlight.com

Clara Mokri (‘21) is a visual journalist pursuing a master’s degree in documentary filmmaking. She was the recipient of the Dorothea Lange Fellowship in 2019 and the 2020 Jim Marshall Fellowship in photojournalism at UC Berkeley. Previously, she worked in the photo departments at Vice and TIME, and interned at Surfer Magazine. Her work has been featured in California Sunday, New York Magazine, Mother Jones, Sports Illustrated and more. She’s a former Division 1 basketball player at Yale University, and received her BA in Political Science. www.claramokriphotography.com

Wesaam Al-Badry (‘20) is a social documentary photographer and interdisciplinary artist. While his work focuses on photo reportage and documentary, Al-Badry also creates multimedia art that challenges and investigates social norms and representation, the Iraqi diaspora and textile. He was the recipient of the 2019 Dorothea Lange Fellowship and is represented by Jenkins Johnson Gallery. www.wesaamalbadry.com

Steve Saldivar (‘10) is a video journalist at the Los Angeles Times. He’s focused on documenting and celebrating Latino life in Southern California. Born in East Los Angeles, he can still be seen walking down Whittier Boulevard looking for his next story. He was the recipient of the 2010 Dorothea Lange Fellowship. www.stevesaldivar.com/portfolio

Tristan Spinski (‘05) is a photographer and writer living in Maine. Tristan is a regular contributor to The New York Times, Mother Jones, The Washington Post and Audubon Magazine, to name a few. He was the recipient of the 2005 Dorothea Lange Fellowship. www.tristanspinski.com
