Ian Stewart
Born and bred in Berkeley, and raised on the Chronicle. In fact, I can track my life based on what section of the paper I picked up first: Started with the funnies, graduated to sports and movie reviews, and finally the front page.
I got my BA from UC Santa Cruz in European History, and was editor-in-chief of the school paper. Got my start at the local daily typing box scores and taking phone calls, and eventually began writing sports, news and feature stories. Became sports editor at the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian until being laid off in early 2009. The bulk of my writing background is in sports, but I find myself moving toward politics and health reporting. I believe compelling storytelling is at the heart of any good story, from high school basketball games to 40-inch investigative pieces to feature obits.
