Reporting Across Cultures, Writing About Race

“Reporting Across Cultures, Writing About Race” is a day-long workshop that will focus on the coverage of differing communities and cultures and on racial issues that many journalists may find difficult to discuss, let alone cover. The Saturday workshop at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism will examine ways to report on cultures and communities that are different from your own, as well as the challenges in reporting on your own neighborhood or group. The workshop will demonstrate how improved coverage can lead to more accurate, more comprehensive stories and how journalists can develop skills that will assist in interviewing reluctant sources and discovering untold stories.

As part of the workshop, documentary filmmaker Lee Harvey will show her award-winning broadcast and will discuss how she resisted racial stereotypes and sought a deeper truth in her powerful work about young white racists in a Southern California town.

The free workshop will be led by Victor Merina, a UC Regents Lecturer and former Los Angeles Times staff writer who is now a senior fellow at the USC Annenberg’s Institute for Justice and Journalism. He will be joined by Lee Harvey, an independent filmmaker, who will discuss her documentary on white racists entitled “The Culture of Hate – Who Are We?” that won the DuPont-Columbia award and other journalism prizes.
