San Francisco Magazine Editors hosted by Cynthia Gorney

If you’re interested in magazine writing/layout, save 6-8 PM,
Thursday Nov. 8, for a library visit by the editor, executive editor, and possibly art director of San Francisco Magazine. The current incarnation of this longstanding city magazine is an odd combo of high-end glitz (they were bought not long ago by the horrifically-named Modern Luxury, Inc., a national outfit that produces mostly minimal content/maximal ads mags in various US cities) and also serious reportage and features that the editors are determined to wedge in there regardless. Make sure to look at the current issue; it is ENORMOUS, bulging with ads. It’s a special issue on Oakland, so there are a number of smaller features in there, along with their big ones, covering material you guys know pretty well.

With us grilling them, these editors will dissect the whole magazine, explaining their decision-making w/regard to layout, assignments, what they accepted from freelancers, what they shopped out to writers they like, etc. Should be instructive…and…hello! They are looking for good new writers. This isn’t a pitch session, but it’s a great way to get to know them, their interests, and in general the brains of magazine people.
