3 Day AI/Journalism Hackathon at UC Berkeley: Harnessing AI to Enhance Trust and Deepen Engagement in Local Communities

AI generated image of hands all working on some kind of computer circuit. How can AI be leveraged to enhance trust and boost media engagement within local communities?

Join Hacks/Hackers and UC Berkeley Journalism for a dynamic weekend that will unite journalists, documentary filmmakers, technologists and designers to explore this question. Audiences need accurate information to make important decisions about their lives and communities. Yet, AI-generated content will make it increasingly difficult for the public to distinguish between authentic and artificial content.

AI also offers powerful tools for strengthening journalism and the field of documentary filmmaking, from advanced fact-checking to authenticating media and developing new stories, tools and platforms for deeper audience engagement.

The Hackathon

The AI Journalism hackathon will bring together thinkers, innovators and change makers, from the UC Berkeley campus, media organizations and beyond. Over the course of the weekend, we’ll examine AI’s impact on audience trust and engagement — both its challenges and opportunities — while collaborating to envision and prototype new solutions.

Our goals are to:

  • Build tools, stories, and platforms that reinforce public trust in media
  • Create innovative audience experiences across media platforms
  • Build stronger connections between media and the communities they serve
  • Share a suite of tools and learning opportunities

Whether you’re a developer, journalist or documentary filmmaker, this is your chance to contribute to a more trustworthy and dynamic media landscape.
