Jamil Smith
Jamil Smith is an award-winning journalist, editor, and audio host whose work examines how identity, politics, and culture shape public life and civil rights in the United States. He has held senior editorial and writing roles at publications such as Rolling Stone, Vox, and The New Republic. His reporting and commentary have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Time magazine—where he published his award-winning cover story about the film “Black Panther.” He has also hosted original podcasts, radio programs, and live events exploring race, politics, and social change.
For more than a decade, Jamil has been a mentor in seminars and via The OpEd Project, helping writers strengthen their voices and tell impactful stories. Prior to his journalism career, he worked in cable news and sports media, where he earned three Sports Emmy Awards at NFL Films.
When he isn’t reporting or teaching, Jamil can usually be found cycling through city streets, traveling to somewhere new, or lost in a good book or movie.
