New photos by Sally Mack from the Guadalcanal Village wetlands restoration site near Vallejo CA will be exhibited at The Faculty Club, January 2-31, 2008. This is an “all pickleweed” exhibit, pickleweed being a plant that is specially adapted to live in salt water. In one species, the springtime light green leaves turn orange, pink, red, and purple as the plant absorbs salt through the seasons.

The photos in the exhibit were taken at a 53-acre wetlands mitigation site owned by CalTrans, developed by a consortium of federal and state resource agencies, located on Mare Island (near Vallejo, CA) along the Napa River. Within a few years it is slated to become part of the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Until it is incorporated into the NWR system, however, Guadalcanal Village is not open to the public. CalTrans and the NWR manager graciously permit Sally to photograph there.
The photos in the exhibit were taken with a Hasselblad film camera and printed at a local lab. The Hasselblad’s signature square format (negatives measure 2-1/4 x 2/14″) give the photos a special look, the large negatives have exquisite detail.
