Mariela likes to code and use data graphics, video, audio and writing to report on topics such as politics, education, business, labor and citizen activism. She worked at MSNBC after being chosen as a fellow for the NBC News Group Summer Fellows Program in partnership with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Mariela graduated summa cum laude from the University of La Verne with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in 2015. Her coverage on adjunct professors’ fight for unionization and students with disabilities won SPJ awards.
Through multimedia platforms, she wants to expand news consumption in the English and Spanish markets.
She is a first generation Mexican American and Los Angeles native. Through multimedia platforms, she wants to expand news consumption in the Latino community. In her free time, she is learning how to speak Korean.
