Kara Platoni is the head of the J200 (first fall semester) program at the J-School, and she is a proud survivor of that very program. (She graduated class of 1999.)

In the spring, she teaches the class that runs the hyperlocal news sites OaklandNorth.net and RichmondConfidential.org, as well as a brand new all-platform class called Story Structures.

Kara is the author of We Have the Technology: How Biohackers, Foodies, Physicians and Scientists Are Transforming Human Perception (Basic Books, 2015). She was previously a staff writer for the East Bay Express for eight years, spent two years as the Senior Editor at Terrain, a Berkeley-based environmental quarterly, and co-hosted The Field Trip Podcast with fellow J-alum Eric Simons. She is also a freelance science writer whose work has appeared in Smithsonian, Popular Science, Air & Space, and other magazines.
