Reporter, City Desk (State Capitol)

The San Francisco Chronicle has an opening for a Reporter City Desk (State Capitol) with a demonstrated ability at finding original stories on the politics and government beat.  We need a reporter who is smart about state politics and policies, especially as they affect the Bay Area. We are looking for a reporter who knows what matters on the state level to the Bay Area and has great sourcing among the elected officials and policymakers who play the key roles.

The Chronicle is a digital-first operation, so the successful candidate will be proficient at turning breaking news quickly, be adept at strategies for enhancing features and deep dives online and be mindful of when and how our audience is most engaged.

We don’t want someone who loves going to press briefings. We are looking for someone to do the explainers of how Gavin Newsom will tackle the housing crisis and health care, what the Democrats will prioritize with their overwhelming majorities in both legislative houses, and how lobbyists and big donors affect politics and policy. We want someone with ambition, someone who can resist Sacramento group think and give Northern Californians clear-eyed information about what is happening on a policy level in the state Capitol — while keeping those clear eyes on the ambitions of our local delegation.

This is not an entry-level job — we’re looking for someone who has thrived in a big-city, state or national news environment and is ready to take over as a newsroom leader.

Duties:

• Report and write political and policymaking hard news and news feature stories for the Chronicle, SFChronicle.com and SFGate.com.
