Position Summary

The Public Health Institute (PHI) is seeking a Public Relations and Outreach Specialist II.

The Public Health Institute (PHI) is a large non-profit public health organization conducting a broad range of public health research, training, and technical assistance programs in California, throughout the nation, and around the world.

The work of PHI and its 200+ program routinely breaks new ground in public health research, policy and practice, and is regularly covered in top-tier print, broadcast and radio networks across the country and around the world. PHI seeks a dynamic, creative and connected PR/Media specialist to grow this work. You are a superb writer and editor, with existing relationships in the media world, an understanding of how to frame tricky topics and a demonstrated ability to translate academic/medical/public health-speak into dynamic, compelling and actionable messages. Your expertise, insight and timing will help place stories that will drive practice change, craft op-eds that will move legislators to support important policies, and ensure that the innovative and effective work of PHI’s leadership and programs gets out into the world so it can truly make a difference. You are able to proactively understand and integrate language, messaging, communications channels and a work approach that contributes to a richer understanding of racial and social justice issues and their connection to health.

The specialist is responsible for: maintaining and developing PHI’s press and media outreach; promoting the work and brand of PHI and its programs; and writing and placing articles and opinion pieces that enhance PHI’s media presence and reflect organizational priorities and messages. This position will lead outreach work that can include identifying new dissemination networks, conferences and audiences. They will also provide general writing and editing support in a small communications department that requires a shared approach to work and a willingness to take on whatever task is at hand.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Lead press relations development, including:

• Prepare articles and press releases for the media;

• Identify and cultivate relationships with journalists,

• Write, edit, pitch and place feature stories, opinion pieces and other earned media;

• Develop, cultivate and enhance on- and off-line channels and strategies to increase engagement with targeted media and outlets;

• Participate in development of novel and proactive media and outreach engagement efforts including campaigns and advocacy efforts;

• Recommend and implement media strategies for release of new products, including messaging, talking points, campaigns, positioning and dissemination channels;

• Work with a large cohort of internal stakeholders to develop a proactive system to identify media opportunities and support implementation;

• Gather and disseminate timely information to media and staff;

• Provide media training and consultation as needed.

• Conceptualize and create digital and print collateral for PHI’s work, initiatives and events:

• Write, edit and proof a wide variety of materials, maintaining consistent PHI voice. Examples include op-eds, blogs, marketing collateral, fact sheets, position papers, website and social media content, and conference presentations;

• Create new publications as needed, moving products through production from start to finish;

• Continually monitor new publishing platforms and design tools to identify new opportunities to position PHI’s content and enhance the user experience for PHI’s audience.

• Implement outreach strategy for promotion of PHI work and services, including:

• Identify new audiences and event opportunities (conferences, presentations, academic events, etc.);

• Contribute to content and creation for freestanding webpages/microsites as needed to highlight PHI and the work of its programs, including at conferences and events;

• Support PHI staff and leadership as they represent PHI at outreach opportunities and events;

• Create materials and content to support outreach efforts.

• Support administrative staff and project directors with communications needs.

• Incorporate a social and racial justice perspective and analysis into communications messaging, products and materials.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mass communication, journalism, public health, public policy, English, marketing or related or equivalent field

• Demonstrated experience with public health/academic/research professionals and content preferred

• Demonstrated understanding of racial and social justice work from a communications perspective

• 5 years of professional press/media experience, preferably from within a public health, academic or research institution, included demonstrated ability to pitch and place high-visibility feature stories and/or opinion pieces

• Established press and media contacts, preferably in health/science/academic beats

• Exceptional writing and editing skills

• Exceptional verbal and written English communications skills

• Ability to multi-task and meet time-driven deadlines

• Familiarity with Facebook Ads and/or Google Ad Words

• Creative, collaborative and problem-solving approaches to work

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

• Demonstrated comfort with use and integration of new and emerging technologies into workflow, press strategy and outreach

• Ability to travel within the United States (10% of the time), which may involve overnight stays.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree

• Spokesperson/media training experience preferred

• Marketing/promotional experience preferred

• Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud tools, online design tools, video editing, and/or CMS and CRM platforms

Important Information

• This is a full time (40 hours/week) position based preferably in Oakland, CA but will consider remote work location.

• The starting salary range for this position is $67,267
