The Young Turks is looking for part-time investigative reporters. Experience is preferred but not necessary. What is necessary is a moral compass and relentless curiosity. Strong writing skills are essential—you should be capable of knocking out wire-service style copy without breaking a sweat. You will be expected to write a mix of entrepreneurial, long-form deep dives, and reactive, quick-turnaround topical short pieces.**Candidates do not need to live/work in Los Angeles.
We are looking for the type of reporter who cannot stop pitching stories of their own but also love to tackle new topics and issues that are assigned to them. Broadly speaking, you should have an interest in how government policies are created and how they affect people’s lives. More narrowly, you should expect to focus on topics including but not limited to campaign finance, political influence, climate change, corporate malfeasance, social justice, and more. Staff reporters will play a role in our social media, so if you have social-media game, let us know.
You must be willing to travel (potentially, within reason, on short notice) and to appear on camera on a regular basis to discuss your work and current affairs. You don’t have to be good at being on camera, just willing to do it (that said, this is not the job to take if your goal is to become famous; we’re looking for muckrakers, not rabble rousers). What we’re not looking for is people to yell about news that someone else first reported. We’re looking for people curious and driven enough to unearth information that’s never been public before. It’s okay if you’re not a reporter—other jobs call for similar skill sets. Maybe you’re a lawyer, or an activist, or an investigator looking for a career change. Or a student who has already demonstrated potential.
If you can show us something you’ve done to demonstrate your potential as a digger, we’re more likely to hire an amateur blogger who doesn’t consider themselves qualified for this job than a professional reporter who assumes they’ll knock it out of the park but has never once broken actual news that wasn’t handed to them. A lot of the methods of investigative journalism can be taught—if you bring the part that can’t be taught: A burning drive to find out something that matters. Some of the best reporters are super aggressive about everything except advocating for themselves, so if you have questions about the job or your suitability for us, please reach out and email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
