Manager, Disinformation Lab
Duties & Responsibilities
First Draft is a new project at the Shorenstein Center. It is a research and learning project, designed to help newsrooms, scholars, fact-checkers and technology companies collaborate and encourage real-time verification of information on the social web. We will bring together a team of researchers who will track and test different ways of responding to misleading, manipulated and fabricated information, using the 2018 U.S. midterm elections as a test case. In addition, we will run projects in a few select countries.
The Disinformation Lab Manager will facilitate and scale the Shorenstein Center’s growing work on misinformation and disinformation on social platforms. Will manage the project’s 2018 election monitoring, recruit and supervise staff. S/he will report to the Program Director of the Misinformation project and will manage a staff of 3-9 FT and PT staff members. The Manager will:
Develop plans and strategies for the project based on current grants, as well as establish the execution of the Disinformation Lab.
Will recruit, train and manage a staff of part-time and full-time researchers and editors to create and run the Disinformation Lab focused on the 2018 midterm US elections. Will work closely with many U.S. newsrooms and reporters as well as technology companies and scholars.
Identify potential targets for research as project progresses. Will run projects, and lead a team with minimal supervision.
Work closely with Center staff to plan and execute small and large scale trainings, events, conferences.
Work closely with Center staff to build a communications strategy for social media, public relations, and printed materials including research reports and event materials.
Handle sensitive situations and confidential information with discretion and problem-solving efficiency.
5 plus years relevant work experience managing complex projects.
A background in data science, familiarity with existing research in misinformation and disinformation, and experience with social networks is highly desirable.
Ability to collect, organize, and analyze large amounts of data through qualitative and quantitative methods, including but not limited to Chartbeat and Google News Lab. Conversant in academic research in technology and media. Technology project management a plus. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as major social media platforms and management tools. Excellent English oral and written communication skills. Well organized, able to prioritize, have strong attention to detail and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated leadership skills, ability to work with minimal supervision, excellent judgment. Some travel is required.
This position is a fully benefits-eligible term appointment ending two years from the date of hire with the possibility of renewal.
