KPBS is committed to providing quality local in-depth news and news analysis on all of its platforms-TV, radio, web, social media and mobile.  The mission of the news division is to provide balanced, accurate reports about the people and issues of importance affecting San Diego & Imperial Counties and its citizens.  KPBS provides in-depth coverage on regional issues via reports through KPBS’ multi-platform journalism initiative, which delves into often unknown or untold critical stories about decisions that affect the citizens of San Diego.


  • Under the supervision of the Director of News & Editorial Strategy, the News & Investigations Editor will supervise the KPBS Investigates desk. The editor leads the team in covering accountability stories with impact in the community, from good governance to consumer exploitation. Stories should be accessible and engaging. Stories will reveal something new, or offer valuable “explainers” to help us get at our news mission to tell our audience not only WHAT is happening in our community, but WHY. The position specializes in synthesizing complex information/data/source leads and digging down to the news contained within. Stories will be distributed on all KPBS platforms, including radio, TV, web, social media and may also be distributed by KPBS partners. The Editor will uphold the highest journalistic standards.

As part of a KPBS team working with inewsource unit, the KPBS News & Investigations Editor will work under the supervision of the Director of News & Editorial Strategy, in coordination with other members of the News Division and, as directed, with KPBS partners.


Specific Duties

The following information is intended to be representative of the work performed by incumbents in this position and is not all-inclusive.  The omission of a specific duty or responsibility will not preclude it from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical extension of position responsibilities.   • The Editor works with the news managers, producers and reporters to develop story ideas that cover issues with major impact in our audience’s lives; lively explainers with the story behind WHY a trend is happening, and investigations with impact. The Editor encourages pitches, helps hone them and carefully selects the ones that best match the KPBS news mission.  Able to distinguish between investigative efforts with maximum results, and ensures the team stays focused on the best stories to tell.


  • The Editor ensures writing is focused, spare, and conversational (if you wouldn’t speak it, don’t write it), at times irreverent, and audio and video for broadcast stories should move the narrative forward, allowing the writer to “get out of the way” of stories that appear to unfold spontaneously. Help reporters not only to write with style, but to create audio-rich radio, write to the pictures in the video, and adapt stories creatively for the web, such as “top five” lists, a budget game, rich election guide, etc.


  • The Editor will train and support the team as members regularly conduct in-depth research that stems from Public Records Act and Freedom of Information Act requests for documents; such requests often require the ability to guide reporters to sort through the most attainable and timely stories to maximize return on the time invested.


  • Possess the ability to extract a range of programming from investigations, both while in process as news merits and in follow-up reporting by giving a topic an ongoing presence in our programming versus a one-time appearance. Use tools to do this such as debrief updates, broadcast spots, program interviews, town halls, web updates, etc. The goal is to deepen reporting over time, and still keep our investigative findings at the top of the news agenda.


  • Motivate and coach team to ensure accountability and optimal performance.


  • Assigning and editing duties will periodically fall on weekends and evenings and as news coverage requires.




The Editor helps implement the news division’s administrative needs, including grant/donor reports.

The Editor manages employee work schedules, and news planning documents by updating with reporter movements and assignments, upcoming news pegs, and air/release dates of station news stories.  The Editor apprises senior management of errors and necessary corrections, audience feedback, and any high-stakes story situations that entail potential legal action, anonymous sourcing, or ethical issues.  The Editor will also coordinate his/her team’s stories when shared with KPBS news partners, including the PBS NewsHour, NPR, and other collaborations.


Other duties: Participate in station on-air fundraising activities, and make appearances for KPBS outreach events.  Additional duties as assigned.




Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

  • Must have track record of editing or reporting stories with impact.
  • Must possess a strong knowledge of journalistic and ethical standards and practices and the editorial/technical/logistical processes required to create multimedia content.
  • Must be able to synthesize documents and data to uncover news stories.
  • Must be able to uncover and petition for the release of documents.
  • Demonstrated excellence in news judgment and ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on all platforms.
  • Impeccable knowledge of grammar, spelling and AP Style.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; reliably meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and supervise a team. Requires superior people and mentoring skills and knowledge of good management practices.
  • Ability to successfully engage audience via social media.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with editors and station colleagues, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at KPBS and within the public broadcasting system
  • Although this job works in partnership with the News Editor and Senior News Producer, and under the supervision of the Director of News, the candidate must be able to work well independently and make good decisions under fast-paced conditions.


  • Minimum five years full-time professional, progressively responsible journalism experience.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent news experience


A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with SDSU Research Foundation
