This position is covered under the SAG/AFTRA collective bargaining agreement with KPBS


The reporter will cover the cream of the crop stories in our region, focusing on issues with greatest impact in our lives.  Stories will be unexpected, engaging, teach something new or offer valuable “explainers” to help us get at our news mission to tell our audience not only WHAT is happening in our community, but WHY.  The reporter will follow political news in our region–not as the proverbial horse race, but as stories of how lives are affected by changing policies in our region, from the local and national level.  The reporter works alone and with the Investigations Desk for accountability reporting, and plays a key role in our election coverage.



The reporter will work at the direction of the Director of News & Editorial Strategy (DNES), under the supervision of the Senior News Editor, and work in coordination with the Senior Producer of News & Convergence, News Editors, and other members of the News Division.


KPBS news beats are, but not exclusive to, arts & culture, border, education, environment, arts, health, culture, investigative, and science & technology.  The reporter will produce news stories that may cross beats at the assignment of the Senior News Editor, and that can be distributed on KPBS radio, TV,, KPBS social networking and KPBS mobile.  The news stories will be produced in formats for radio newscasts, in-depth radio features, TV packages, multi-media projects and special reports as assigned.


The reporter may be assigned to anchor radio newscasts, and appear as a guest or host on KPBS TV and radio programs.  The reporter will produce local content and prepare final productions that can be distributed on all KPBS platforms.


The reporter is expected to participate in station on-air fundraising activities, and make appearances for KPBS community building events and other public relations activities.


Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrated excellence in news judgment and ability to generate engaging story ideas.
  • Ability to think creatively about topics and story angles.
  • Knowledge and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Ability to start stories online first.
  • Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and AP Style.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, handle multiple stories at once, and shift gears quickly.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with editors and station colleagues, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at KPBS and within the public broadcasting system.
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and proof of insurance required.
  • Understand and follow posted work rules and procedures
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • Be able to work in breaking news situations.

Minimum Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work in journalism
  • Minimum two years professional, progressively responsible experience in journalism.

This position requires a valid CA drivers license, clean driving record and proof of insurance.
