Freelance Editorial Assistant

Via, the award-winning AAA Member magazine in nine western states, seeks a freelance editorial assistant to support the staff by providing administrative, editorial, and project management support to the team.

This entry-level, part-time role, which reports to the Managing Editor, is an excellent steady gig for a budding freelancer or a journalism graduate student who’s interested in travel magazines, print and digital publishing, fact-checking, and/or social media and direct marketing.

The freelance editorial assistant handles varied tasks, including:

·       Fact-checking photographs and manuscripts

·       Assisting editors with story research and development

·       Attending manuscript, art, and related meetings, contributing ideas and taking notes

·       Writing blog posts, as assigned

·       Organizing and filing page proofs after each issue

·       Performing website quality control (fixing links, adding metadata, etc.)

·       Maintaining general correspondence

·       Mailing issues to authors, sources, and readers

·       Managing subscription requests and troubleshooting problems

·       Distributing print editions in the office on a quarterly basis

·       Supporting social media team by sourcing art and crafting messages

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

·       A journalism degree or at least two years of publishing experience, such as internships or other assistant-level work

·       People, proofreading, and project management skills

·       Writing ability (relevant clips)

·       Ability to efficiently multitask and meet deadlines

·       Problem-solving flair, with a knack for innovation

·       Highly motivated with the ability to work independently as well as with a team

·       Knowledge of Drupal, Excel, and/or InDesign is a plus

·       Available to work on-site in Walnut Creek at least 15 hours per week
