Editor, California Online

California  Magazine is a general-interest magazine and news site exploring cutting-edge ideas and innovation emanating from UC Berkeley and beyond. Winner of CASE Awards for College and University General Interest Magazines in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2017,  California magazine reports on politics, culture, science, technology, economics, literature and the arts, with Berkeley as its source of context and inspiration. California Online delivers timely web-exclusive news stories and features as well as serving as the online home of California magazine.

The Editor, California Online is responsible for managing the California magazine web site and its various components, including home and story pages, news and feature stories, art, and multimedia. The Editor is required to share and push our content out to different online outlets, cultivate connections with other sites and sources interested in sharing our content, oversee and manage all social media platforms, and keep California’s voice consistent across all platforms. In addition, this editor will monitor daily breaking news and trending stories and work with other editors and writers to produce timely and compelling responses. The editor will also be required to attend weekly editorial meetings to brainstorm ideas for online article and videos, and work closely with the Managing Editor to maintain standards, encourage efficiencies, while creating a dynamic give and take between the two products.

Responsibilities:
  • Assigning and editing web and social media content

  • Collaborating to conceive, create or discover story and multimedia elements for the website, including finding and editing photo images, producing video pieces, and creating interactive graphics.

  • Meeting weekly with supervisor to ensure that all content on the site reflects the vision and editorial standards of the magazine articulated by the Editor-in-Chief

  • Participating in the weekly news meeting with the California magazine staff to strategize

  • Working with supervisor to find promotional opportunities for website

  • Handling promotion of stories and curating content on social media while seeking news outlets to engage readers.

  • Promoting online content on social media and third-party sites; assigning these tasks to associate editor

  • Overseeing the work of staff and freelance website contributors

  • Uploading website and social media content, and assigning these tasks to other staffers or interns when appropriate

  • Working closely with CAA’s IT staff to troubleshoot technical issues and with Marketing staff on promotions

  • Monitor news and other sites for breaking news and trend stories to report on, follow or share.

  • Assist with coding within the website’s Drupal CMS system.

  • Helping to conceive, create or find story and multimedia elements for the website, including finding and editing photo images, producing video pieces, and creating interactive graphics.

 

This is a full-time non-exempt position. The salary range is $20-23.24/hr and is eligible to participate in our benefit plans.  CAA offers an excellent health care and generous paid time-off benefits, supplemental benefits package, 403(b), and more. REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years journalism experience; Understanding of news values and commitment to journalistic ethics

  • Critical thinking skills, an ability to understand and communicate complex issues

  • Excellent writing and grammar

  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and meet deadlines under pressure

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with Adobe Photoshop

  • Demonstrated ability to grow readership/viewership via social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, etc.

  • Experience with web publishing and content management systems; an ace with Drupal

  • Strategy oriented, detail oriented

  • Familiarity with Mac operating environment and Google environment

  • Working knowledge of html

  • Experience shooting and editing video

  • Ability to work independently, and with the team

  • Amenable to working a flexible schedule that could include nights, mornings and weekends.

  • Submit to and pass Consumer Report and FBI/DOJ background check investigations

  • Possess valid CA driver’s license, clean driving record

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of editing, writing, and multimedia journalism experience

  • Experience in higher education, alumni association, and/or non-profit setting

  • Knowledge of UC Berkeley and/or the Cal Alumni Association
