Content Strategy Manager, Kaiser Health News

KFF, the non-profit health policy analysis, polling and journalism organization, is seeking a Content Strategy Manager to join the staff of Kaiser Health News (KHN), its editorially independent newsroom distributing in-depth coverage of health issues across the country. Kaiser Health News, an ambitious and growing provider of news on health care politics, policy and business, is creating this new position to expand the distribution of our news. You will help build a structure for analytics-informed decision-making in order to identify underserved markets and the best new platforms for presenting our unique and original articles, broadcasts and graphics to an even larger audience.

This is an ideal position for someone in the early stages of their career who has a flair for marketing a unique product. KHN has a team of more than 50 reporters and editors across the United States producing content about the problems of the American health care system and its possible solutions. While KHN has a vibrant and ambitious staff based primarily in Washington, D.C., and California, we have recently established a Midwest Bureau and have staffed up in Colorado.

Our content is provided free to any media outlet and is used by hundreds of them. Our primary partners for our award-winning content include major national news organizations like NPR, The New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today. Scores of regional and local news outlets also pick up our stories under a Creative Commons license. But we need to go further and deeper to reach different kinds of audiences and in different ways whether it is through mobile devices, commercial radio or intelligent home devices, particularly in the Midwest and in Colorado and the surrounding states. We don’t run ads, and we don’t chase clicks. But we do want to measure our impact and extend our reach in creative ways.

What We Are Looking For:

This is a completely new position for us to bring more analytics and strategy to our distribution efforts, so you’ll be defining the job. Ideally, we’d want someone who has:

  • Skills to develop a product strategy that advances KHN’s mission
  • Product management experience, ideally at a news organization
  • An ability to use data to influence product strategy and present that data to editors
  • Strong skills in data analysis and interpretation and an eagerness to adapt analytics platforms for our distribution model
  • Reasonable technical background to understand demands of infrastructure technologies
  • A record of successfully launching new products
  • An ability to create roadmaps or project plans
  • A knack for early recognition and appraisal of new digital product news platforms
  • A willingness to serve as an in-house expert on analytics tools and track analytics from third party platforms like Apple News and Flipboard.

For more than a decade, these reports have provided readers with daily updates on how the media are covering U.S. health care policy.

This full-time position is based in KFF’s Washington, DC office or its San Francisco, CA headquarters. This is a term position through December 2021 with the possibility of extension and offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, and includes an excellent benefits package.
