Associate Editor

Zócalo Public Square, the Los Angeles-based magazine of ideas and live event series, seeks an experienced, ambitious, and dynamic Associate Editor to join a thriving organization with outsize reach and reputation.

We are looking for a highly creative and nimble person who is passionate about great writing, values big ideas over hot takes, and can work collaboratively with our team to explore fundamental questions facing society. The ideal candidate will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor, and Associate Publisher in conceptualizing and developing thoughtful multimedia journalism.

The Associate Editor will direct daily copy flow, making sure that assigned pieces are filed, edited, and prepared for publication in a timely manner. A knack for writing smart, spirited headlines is essential, as is a keen eye for pairing the right visuals with our content.

The Associate Editor will also be responsible for helping to ensure overall quality control, including line editing, fact-checking, and backreading stories. Knowledge of copyediting and familiarity with AP style guidelines are essential, along with the ability to frame complex ideas in accessible language.

The Associate Editor will also be a part of our events team—helping to conceptualize events, as well as editing event descriptions, writing event rundowns, conducting one-on-one interviews, and producing other related content.

This is a great opportunity for a creative, entrepreneurial, and intellectually curious editor to learn, grow, and join a close-knit team at a dynamic nonprofit organization.

The Associate Editor must be able to work out of Zócalo’s offices in downtown Los Angeles, and commit to long hours, occasional weekend and evening work, and some domestic and international travel.

Pay and benefits are competitive. Zócalo is an ASU Knowledge Enterprise and this editor will be employed by Arizona State University and eligible to participate in a full range of benefits, including health care, retirement, and tuition benefits.

Interested applicants should send cover letter, resume, and writing and/or editing samples to Please include “Associate Editor” in the subject line. The interview process includes an editing and headline test.

START DATE: January 3, 2019, or sooner.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 2 years editing and/or reporting.

DURATION: Permanent
